Powley insists Chipstead won't let promotion slip from their grasp

WITH just five games to go, Chipstead are sitting top of Surrey Two, but director of rugby Carl Powley is adamant he will not stand for complacency. Chipstead were in a similar position last season, but threw away their hopes of a top-two finish and promotion after a few dismal results late in the campaign. And Powley insists there will be no repeat this season as Chipstead target a place in Surrey One. "There is no reason why we can't win all five of our remaining games," Powley explained. "Our only loss this season came against Old Amplefordians and that game was not a very good performance. We haven't lost a game since then, but when you play the teams lower down in the table they are always looking to take a scalp. "I'm confident and the team are confident, but I'm never completely happy because that is when you start to rest on your laurels. We don't want a repeat of last season and another year in this league, we want to be in Surrey One." Chipstead beat third-placed side Croydon by an emphatic 18-0 margin last weekend, having beaten second-placed Law Society 17-13 the weekend before, but Powley believes there is still room for improvement. "We didn't capitalise on the wind in the second half against Croydon," he said. "One area I think we could have improved on is working with the weather rather than rely on our bigger forwards to take us down the pitch. "We were by far the better side against Croydon, which was helped by the fact we had our strongest team available, bar one. "We only scored five points in the first half but we did that with the wind in our faces, but we should have used that to our advantage more in the second half. "I know the coaches at Croydon well and I know they would have liked to have beaten my team." Chipstead now have a week's break before they host Bec Old Boys at High Road on March 1. "I'm a bit disappointed we have a week off now because we are on a bit of a run and so you want to keep that going," Powley lamented. "It will give our pitch a bit of time to recover though because it's been quite bad."
