PHOTOS: Surrey volunteers rescue stranded residents from floods

SURREY Search and Rescue (SurSAR) volunteers have continued their support of the county's firefighters during the flooding. The team has been busy rescuing vulnerable and elderly residents from homes around the Chertsey area. Team members wearing full protective drysuits, and equipped with a rescue boat and 4x4, answered 999 calls from distressed residents unable to get to safety, or stuck in their homes. A 72-year-old woman and her daughter were today brought to safety by the unpaid specialists, from what Incident Commander James Rossell described as "a very scary set of conditions for people who are cut off from the outside world". The first rescue which SurSAR were involved in this week was a similar evacuation of an elderly couple, both of whom suffer from mobility problems, who phoned in a 999 call when rising flood levels meant that they could no longer move around their home. They were successfully brought to safety in the team's small rescue boat. SurSAR volunteers will be joined by colleagues from teams in Norfolk, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Bedfordshire, and many other counties as rain is expected to fall heavily on Friday. A rescue team is being located at three major Fire Stations across the county to ensure the best response to all situations. SurSAR is a charity funded by donations.
