THE A22 was this afternoon (Friday) closed off along a greater stretch of the road than yesterday due to serious flooding. And more heavy rain is on its way tonight.
The A22 is now closed at the Wapses Lodge roundabout, Caterham Valley all the way along its four-mile length to
Purley, where it has been closed to traffic at Downs Court Road. Drivers face lengthy diversions.
Deep floodwater caused by the emergence of the Caterham bourne flowing above ground after weeks of intense rainfall, has led to the chaos at Whyteleafe.
Some families have been evacuated and the fire brigade is battling to keep floodwater out of Sutton and East Surrey Water's Kenley pumping station, which is threatened with having to be shut down.
More stormy weather with heavy rain is expected after dark this evening. And there will be gales, too, said the Met Office.
More than 22mm of rain fell in Coulsdon in the 24 hours up to 9am today, exacerbating the serious situation at Whyteleafe.
The Met Office predicts yet more heavy showers on Saturday and Sunday along with gales. And as if that wasn't enough, this afternoon, it issued a yellow warning for more heavy rain on Tuesday - not good news for the people of Caterham Valley, Whyteleafe and Kenley.
