East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah has said the murder investigation into the death of a 17-year-old girl in Oxted yesterday is truly shocking news for the town's peaceful community.
Detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team are investigating the death after the girl's body was discovered in a flat in Amy Road at about 5.20pm yesterday (Fri).
Earlier neighbours described how they felt shocked to learn of the tragic news and said it was completely unexpected in their sleepy suburban town.
In a statement released earlier today Mr Gyimah said: "I was extremely saddened to learn that a murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 17 year old girl in Oxted yesterday.
"This is truly shocking news for an otherwise peaceful community, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this tragic time."
The investigation into the girl's death is still on-going stairs leading into the flat cordoned off earlier today while forensic officers worked at the scene.
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
According to a police spokesman, while the investigation into the death is at an early stage it is believed the two teenagers are known to each other although the exact nature of the relationship is not yet known.
