A man from Epsom has today (Friday, January 17) been sentenced to five years imprisonment for his part in an armed robbery against a taxi driver in February last year.
Danny John Young, 25, of Gatley Avenue, Epsom appeared at Guildford Crown Court for sentencing after entering a guilty plea to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear on Friday, 13 December.
Since he was charged in July, Young had been remanded in custody.
The incident occurred shortly after 11.20pm on Friday, 22 February a taxi driver picked up passengers from Worcester Park and travelled to Stanton Close, Epsom where he was threatened with a firearm and robbed of his wallet and mobile phone.
Although left shaken following the robbery, the victim, a man in his 30s, was not hurt by the offenders.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Catherine Jenkin from East Surrey CID, said: "This was a complex investigation which lasted several months but we were determined to bring those responsible for this awful offence to justice.
"The victim endured a terrifying ordeal at the hands of the Young brothers and no doubt this incident will stay with him for some time but I hope the sentence passed today will go some way to bring him closure.
"Incidents of this nature are rare in East Surrey but when they do occur they no doubt heighten the fear of crime among lone workers in our community. If you would like advice on personal safety and crime reduction please contact your local safer neighbourhood team on 101."
