RESIDENTS have reacted angrily to Surrey County Council's decision not to install traffic calming and parking measures outside a school.
A petition with nearly 500 signatures was presented to council members by parents with children at Micklefield School in Somers Road, Reigate.
It called for a zebra crossing outside the school, for the speed limit to be reduced to 20mph, for the 30-minute parking bays to be extended, and for restrictions on St Albans Road to be changed.
But many felt they were met with hostility by the gathered councillors, with one parent who spoke at this week's local committee meeting being interrupted more than once.
"I was shocked," said Katrina Millard, whose child has been at the school three years. "We weren't told about the meeting until the last minute so we didn't get to see the council's response to our petition.
The whole thing seemed shambolic. I was supposed to get three minutes [to talk], which it didn't feel like I did because I was interrupted."
The petition was organised following growing concern for children's safety outside the school.
"Every day we're seeing near misses," Mrs Millard added. "My friend, who is a parent, and myself are going to continue to push for this. We've got our online petition up and running and we want to get more signatures."
Officers for the council said there were no resources to install the traffic calming measures, though they will look at the options available to them.
