THE governors of a dilapidated village school are due to unveil proposals to demolish the building and sell part of its grounds to housing developers in order to fund a reconstruction project.
As reported in the Advertiser in August, Weald CofE Primary School requires urgent attention in order to continue providing education for the children of Beare Green.
Three options are being explored by governors, the first being the comprehensive refurbishment of the crumbling school building.
The second and third options involve doing a deal with a developer to build housing either on or beside the school field, which is within the green belt.
But this week head teacher Sharon Davis revealed the refurbishment and retention of the building was lowest on the school's list of preferences.
Mrs Davis spoke to the Advertiser in the run-up to a public exhibition at which all options will be discussed with residents and parents.
She said correspondence had already been received that had expressed concerns about some aspects of the plans.
"Most people that I or other members of the development project team talk to say that they want to do the best for the children and want to come to the exhibition to find out more before drawing any conclusions or judgements about the different ways to achieve this," she said.
"I have had four e-mails and letters to date regarding the development idea, two from secondary pupils and two from local residents.
"All four were sharing their concerns, which included congestion, drains – which already struggle – safety issues with more people living in the area, and not losing key aspects of the school, including our chickens."
The public exhibition of development proposals will take place in the Newdigate Road school's hall on Wednesday, September 25, between 2 and 8pm.
