Villagers' plea for 20mph speed limit rejected

A NEW 20mph speed limit will not be introduced in Chipstead any time soon, after the plans were labelled "ridiculous".

At a meeting of Surrey County Council's Reigate and Banstead local committee, councillor Ken Gulati, who is the county councillor for Banstead, Woodmansterne and Chipstead, asked his colleagues to agree "in principle" to approve a blanket 20mph speed limit for the village.

But the plans were thrown out.

Redhill county councillor Natalie Bramhall said: "I'm afraid I can't support a 20mph limit for the whole of Chipstead, it's ridiculous."

Cllr Bramhall agreed that some of the roads in the village were used as a rat run however, and that the introduction of a limit in some areas could work.

Councillor Gulati responded that "we're seeking agreement in principle. We'll then go forward to talk with officers, the police and residents about the details."

After a number of attempts the recommendation was reworded and it was agreed that Chipstead Residents Association would investigate a 20mph limit.

Council officers moved to highlight that no council resources would be offered in respect to the work and no money would be set aside for it.
