RECORD numbers of visitors enjoyed the Godstone Fete and Donkey Derby on bank holiday Monday.

Four thousand people revelled in the "fantastic atmosphere" and enjoyed an ice cream in the sun at the popular annual event.

Mike Jones, one of the organisers, said: "It was just brilliant and no one fell off the donkeys, which is always a huge relief."

This year a record number of stallholders attended, with 80 of them selling food and goodies galore.

Mr Jones said: "It was great to see so many people enjoying their time there.

"There was also a Punch and Judy show, and at one point there must have been at least 100 children sat there laughing away at it. It just shows that even the more traditional bits of the fete are really popular.

"There were no problems and it all ran really smoothly.

"We do not know how much we raised yet – we are still trying to add it all up."

Last year, £7,500 was raised and this year the organising committee hope to go even better.

Mr Jones said: "I think the fact that there were more people there means that we will have raised a lot.

"All the money raised goes to local causes such as the mother and toddler group in the village."

Mr Jones also asked if anyone wishes to volunteer to help organise the fete next year. Anyone willing to lend a hand should e-mail godstonefete@btinternet.com
