PERMISSION to sell alcohol 24-hours a day has been granted to an Oxted petrol station.

Tandridge District Council's licensing sub-committee met to discuss extending the hours for Old Oxted Service Station, in West Hill, last Thursday.

Rose Thorn, chairman of the committee, said: "There was no reason for this application to not be accepted.

"There is no history of any problems around there. They have been open for 24 hours a day for the last year, but now they will be able to sell alcohol for that time.

"We want smaller businesses to be able to keep up with the larger retailers."

The owners of the shop will now be able to sell alcohol for an extra six hours a day, meaning it will be sold 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Near neighbour Erica Barnes, of West Hill, said she was worried the license could lead to antisocial behaviour.

She said: "Twenty-four hour sales of alcohol inevitably leads to antisocial behaviour and crime, and this has no place in the residential area of Old Oxted."

Six conditions sought by the police have been attached to the licence , including close monitoring of CCTV, and maintaining an incident log.

Surrey Police had previously expressed concerns that extending the licence could make the site vulnerable to crime and disorder.

As the Mirror went to press, no one from the garage had yet commented.
