Council could sell site to travellers

A LONG-STANDING travellers' site could be sold to the travelling community so it can become a permanent settlement.

Travellers have rented the site off Green Lane, Outwood, from Tandridge District Council since the 1980s.

But at a meeting of the full council last month it was suggested it would be more "financially viable" to sell the site to the group, which calls itself Traveller Consultancy.

Clive Moore, the council's assistant chief executive, said: "Members at that stage (in July) wanted clarification for the options of the Green Lane site and that includes the sale of the site.

"They wanted further information by mid-September and a further committee meeting will be held in the near future – a date has not yet been set."

At the meeting on July 18, councillors heard how leasing the site was not "financially viable" for Traveller Consultancy and its sale would also relieve the council of other costs associated with the land.

Councillors decided to get two more valuations for the site.

A meeting will be held next month to consider officers' findings.
