Call for pedestrian crossing on hazardous Reigate Hill

THERE are renewed calls for a pedestrian crossing on one of Reigate's busiest roads.

Schoolchildren, shoppers trying to get to the Esso petrol station and patrons of the Yew Tree pub on Reigate Hill all face a daily hazard to cross the busy A217, close to where the speed limit drops from 40 to a 30mph limit.

Helen and Warren Andrews see the problems every day from their pub, as their customers and others have to dart across the main road.

Mr Andrews believes a crossing is badly needed.

"It will take a death for Surrey County Council to do something, we have got to stop that," he said.

The plea is backed by borough councillor for Reigate Hill, Roger Newstead, who says crossing the road is an "absolute nightmare".

He backed a campaign about eight years ago for a crossing at the same spot.

"We tried to get a crossing so that people that live to the north and west of the hill can get across to get to Reigate and Holmesdale school, and people on the other side can get to the petrol station shop and the pub," he said. "As far as I recall, the police supported it but it fell at the county council budget hurdle. I would be very supportive of any effort to have a complete crossing or an island there."

Surrey County Council was unable to respond before the Mirror went to press.
