DOZENS of pupils from Dunottar School have raised more than £1,000 for an orphanage in Zambia.

The 42 Year 9 students from the Reigate school raised £1,383.39 for the Lubasi Home in Livingstone – which cares for children from the age of five until they are adopted or are old enough to earn a living.

The charity survives on donations from local businesses.

The pupils' fundraising activities included a fancy dress sponsored run in which the students dressed up as what they dreamed of being when they grew up.

They also sold home-made cakes, sweets, hosted a bring and buy sale, gave manicures, and held a guess the eggs in the basket competition and a lucky dip.

The charity was chosen by student Georgia Sherry after she visited the orphanage last year.

"My dad had always wanted to do something for charity and so he went on the internet and found an orphanage in Zambia called Lubasi, which means family home", said the 13-year-old. "We went to visit the orphanage for four hours. It doesn't sound like a long time but we had a tour and managed to donate gifts donated by my friends."

Year 9 form tutor Tessa Katesmark said: "I was very impressed with the Year 9's enthusiasm and commitment in fundraising for this worthwhile charity."
