SCIENCE whizzes from a Reigate school have beaten peers from 37 schools and colleges to scoop a science and maths award.
Year 8 pupils from Dunottar school's science club competed at the Big Bang South East science fair at The Hawth in Crawley on July 2.
The fair celebrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) and attracted 4,000 visitors.
Kayleigh Groenewald, Laura Johnson, Da-Hae Lee, Elizabeth O'Shea and Megan O'Shea, all 13, presented their project entitled "An Investigation into the Properties and Uses of Pyramids" to a packed auditorium and claimed the "Mathematics or Statistics" award and £100.
Sean O'Shea, who runs the school's club, said: "The girls spoke eloquently, fielded some very searching questions – especially from engineers who were judging – and were professional throughout."
Assistant head teacher Lindsay Hale said: "It's a wonderful achievement and we are enormously grateful to the energy, enthusiasm and time that Sean O'Shea has committed to help the girls achieve this great win."
The club has been invited to the national Big Bang finals in Birmingham in March next year, expected to attract more than 65,000 visitors.
