MANY hands made light work of weeds in Horley Churchyard at the weekend.
Last month the Mirror reported how a change in funding had led to the Church Lane cemetery becoming overgrown with weeds – in some places growing higher than the gravestones.
But on Saturday a team of seven volunteers took up their shears and rakes to tackle the overgrown plants.
Reverend Calvert Prentis told the Mirror: "We said we needed help and we got our first working party together.
"We will be doing more to keep the churchyard looking good and I would like to ask anyone who wants to to join us."
Earlier this year Horley Town Council asked the Churchyard Committee to put its long-standing gardening contract out to tender.
But under the new agreement the grass can only be professionally cut twice a year.
As a result Rev Prentis is hoping to take another working party out to clear the churchyard again on August 31 at 10am.
