SCULPTURES, paintings and ceramics were all on show at this year's Lingfield Art Exhibition.

But this year, the strapped for cash exhibition's organisers had to buy a painting to put up as a raffle prize, in an effort to boost visitor numbers.

The annual event, held at Lingfield and Dormansland Community Centre, has seen a decline in takings over recent years.

There were around 500 pieces of artwork on display, and for the first time this year the committee have had to start charging 10 per cent commission on the sale of any artwork.

"We are struggling for funds," admitted committee member June Ragsdale. "Even though people have to pay to enter the show, we have to hire the hall and a storage system."

The show's committee need to make about £1,500 to break even each year.

She added: "We bought the painting, by artist Isobel Chapman, to help boost sales of the raffle tickets.

"We never have enough money to pay for advertising, so it is a bit like a Catch 22."

Around 1,000 people visit the show every year, which this year ran from July 16–21).

Although the final total made had not been finalised before the Observer went to press, organisers believe they should have covered their costs.
