A WOMAN in her 20s was approached by a man in a car as she walked alone along London Road in Merstham.

The man in a dark red car approached the victim close to Rockshaw Road at around 11.30am on June 11. He tried to engage her in conversation and followed her for several minutes.

The news spread quickly on Facebook and in local round-robin e-mails. But Surrey Police spokeswoman Dawn Groom said they are not looking at the incident as an attempted kidnapping.

She said: "The man tried to engage in conversation with the woman and was persistent in doing so by remaining near her for several minutes.

"At no point did the man leave his vehicle or attempt to force the woman into the car.

"At this stage in the investigation this is being treated as an isolated incident."

News of an apparent "attempted abduction" spread quickly on the internet.

Merstham resident Tracey Winsmore, 52, said: "You just don't expect that in this area, it is so quiet. I've heard about the odd problem in the alleys but not for a while."
